Personalized Children's Books in Japanese

日本語

For Japanese families raising children in London, Sydney or San Francisco, and for grandparents back in Japan, a picture book in Japanese where the child is the hero is a lovely thing to share. It gives a young heritage-language reader a reason to open a Japanese book again and again.

At Joonoo.art you upload a photo, choose a theme and one of 15 illustration styles, and we write and illustrate an original Japanese story starring your child. Add brothers, sisters, parents, or Obaachan and Ojiichan if you like, up to five people in one book. With Japanese as the story language, the title and every page are written in Japanese, in hiragana, katakana and kanji, and set in a font designed for Japanese. A name typed in Latin letters is written in Japanese kana.

The sample below, あおいとみおのお花見ピクニック, follows two sisters through a spring day with their grandparents: making onigiri in Obaachan's kitchen, a picnic under the cherry blossoms, koi in the pond and paper planes on the grass. It was written in Japanese from the first page. Every book starts with a free preview, then you choose a digital PDF or a printed book.

Questions about Japanese books

Is the story written in kanji or in hiragana?

In kana mixed with kanji, as in everyday Japanese. There is no furigana over the kanji.

Is the text set vertically?

No. The book is set horizontally, reading left to right, like most picture books with a picture above the text.

How are names written?

A Japanese name typed in Latin letters is written in hiragana, and no kanji is invented for it. Names from other languages are written in katakana, the way Japanese writes them. A name you type in Japanese is kept exactly as typed. In the sample, Aoi and Mio became あおい and みお.

Do I need to type in Japanese?

No. You answer the questions in English and choose Japanese as the story language. You can also type your story idea in Japanese.
